Ok im getting to the point of firing this old tractor up after a engine rebuld.
When adjusting the tappets like the book said with 1 piston tdc i adjust 1,2,3,5 to. Any suggestion on either issue. Back to top. I'm thinking it should be degrees. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I recall.
Yep, you should be rotating the engine degrees, not I would check all the battery cables and connections. I once had a problem like that and found that the clamp that goes on the battery post was cracked. Poor ground is a possibility also. Do you know if it takes two batteries or just one and also I took starter off and I can"t hardly turn it over by hand either getting frustrated.
Does it spin up ok if you hook it to the battery while you have it off the tractor? If it does there might be something binding inside the engine. Model and size of engine? Possibly this is not a procedure for all Internal combustion engines After taking everything back apart found the thrush washer was tore up again.
Can't figure out why it keeps going threw thrust washers this was the reason for the whole rebuild to begin with and haven't even had it running and now I need another set of thrust washer and crankshaft work. I am currently replacing the hydraulic lift cylinder, and lift shaft bushings in my MF40 Industrial Hydraulic Lift Cover. I have the service manual, and I am reading over the lift cover adjustments. I do not have the special tools, and I was curious if it is possible to perform the lift cover adjustments without the special tools and how complicated the job is?
Am I better off taking the lift cover to a local tractor repair shop? Thank you! Back to top. Hello, If you guess the stop adjustments incorrectly you run the risk of breaking the new cylinder or cover. If you have someone nearby with the tools it would be worth letting them set it up. DavidP, South Wales. I second what DavidP said! You don't want this to happen. Report to Moderator.
Yes and no When set correctly the ram arm on the main hydraulic cross shaft will stop moving before it allowed to butt up against the casing.

Say for instance that you remove the maximum height stop on the Position lever quadrant. This will allow the ram arm to make contact with the casing and the result can be a broken cover or cylinder. When raised to full adjusted operating height against the stop on the quadrant you should be able to lift BY HAND ONLY the 3-point a further one to one and a half inches to its maximum free height.
This damage can occur more easily on earlier tractors which had the thinner lift cover. Good stuff to know, thank you. A few months ago, I removed the top cover on my 8N to do some repair work on it. I noticed that on the long control arm that actuated the control valve, it had a dowel pin that was lined up with the side of the cylinder end.
I was told that it was there to prevent over travel of the piston. If the piston came out too far, it's skirt would hit that dowel pin and it would push the control arm back so it would back off on the control valve.Shop Now. View Cart. Allis Chalmers. Farmall IH. Ford 9N,2N,8N.

Hi, Cold " Hot " Make sure you do not overtighten the tappets as you can split them easily.
DavidP, South Wales. As per my AD manual. Valves 1,2,3,4,and five are done first then rotate engine degrees and do valves 5 and 6 Don. All times are GMT - 8 Hours. Fast Shipping! On other sites I have seen references to this issue: speciifcally the position control linkage becoming displaced when the position control lever is moved outside of its normal range of motion.
Back in on a forum in Yesterday's TractorsBig Dean Austin stated that " the Position control has a piece of linkage that when you move the position lever to sic far it will jump out of place it will happen almost every time you do that. To get it back where it belongs you will have to remove the liftcover. Last edited by klancf51; at AM. Reason: correction. Originally Posted by klancf My Position Control is not working. Not sure I am supposed to see anything move. I had our local tractor mechanic fix it. I believe it took longer to pull the cover than to get the linkage bak in alignment.

We need to hear from someone who knows the fix. Do not remove the lift cover until you are comfortable that you know what you are doing or it may cost you a control valve or at the least a lot of time fixing the mistake you made, usually through the lack of knowledge, or the NEED to RIP things to bits, anyway tell me all you know and I will talk you through your Dilemma.

Hello There! You should have an IT manual for that tractor. I do and it gives the wrong procedure, called a tractor mechanic and he explained the proper way. Non diesel Continental Gas. I like to adjust them with the engine running at an idle after it has warmed up. You may get some oil splatter but you don't need to worry about the engine not being in the right position.
It is a lot easier with 2 people. Phil Are the exhaust. THanks again. I'm not familiar with the continental engines. Mine are all Perkins. They call for. It should be easy enough to find out. Better to be loose than tight and risk burning a valve.Shop Now. View Cart. Allis Chalmers. Farmall IH.

There should be a floating screen assembly on the end of that pipe. It should have a screen to keep any big chunks from getting in the oil pump. What engine do you have, the 4 cylinder Continental, or the 3 cylinder Perkins engine. For the 4 cylinder Continental the pickup screen is part number M For the 3 cylinder Perkins the part number is M1, on the Perkins there is spring that goes on the pickup tube part number M1 it goes on the tube before the pickup screen does.
For the Continental you will probably have to find one from a tractor salvage yard.
